出生於紐約市，父親卡斯滕·喬韓森 (Karsten Johansson)是一名建築師，爺爺埃納爾·喬韓森 (Ejner Johansson)則是一名編劇與導演；母親梅拉尼·斯隆 (Melanie Sloan)是來自於布朗克斯的猶太裔製作人。喬韓森的雙親在丹麥相遇並同居。喬韓森擁有一個姐姐瓦內薩·喬韓森（Vanessa Johansson），同樣也是一名演員；一個哥哥亞德里安Adrian、一個孿生兄弟亨特Hunter，以及一個同父異母的弟弟Christian。

喬韓森於2002年進入曼哈頓職業兒童學校就讀，開始接受演藝訓練。

喬韓森從小的時候就開始演戲，她母親很早就帶她去試鏡。^[1]她9歲於一部電影首度亮相，在1994年的科幻喜劇電影North裡面飾演John Ritter的女兒。^[2]之後在1995年的電影Just Cause裡飾演一個小角色。到了1996年，在電影參與一角。並且在Manny & Lo的演出讓她入圍獨立精神獎的最佳女主角，^[2]並獲得正面評價。

在1997年於電影「Fall」和Home Alone 3飾演一些小角色後，喬韓森在電影輕聲細語當中受到廣泛注目。^[2] 也因該部電影入圍芝加哥電影評論協會的最有為女演員。^[3]^[4]稍後在1999年的電影My Brother the Pig和2001年的電影The Man Who Wasn't There當中出現。並在1999年的一首單曲演出一部MV。^[5] Although the film was not a box office success,^[6]到了2002年，喬韓森在電影八腳怪飾演一個小角色。

2011年末，史嘉蕾·喬韓森穿弔帶裙登上美國版《Cosmopolitan》雜誌2012年1月號封面。^[7]

喬韓森甚少提到自己的私生活，曾經表示過：「最好不要讓大家知道我的事情」"^[8] 喬韓森在2007年開始與加拿大出生的演員萊恩·雷諾斯交往，^[9]並且在2008年5月5日，報導指出他們已經訂婚的消息。^[10]在同年9月27日，喬韓森和雷諾在英屬哥倫比亞的一個小城市Tofino低調舉行婚禮。^[11]之後花280萬美金在洛杉磯附近買了房子。^[12]在2010年12月14日，喬韓森和雷諾斯宣布分居的消息。^[13]雷諾斯在2010年12月23日宣布由於無法解決的分歧決定離婚。喬韓森也迅速地發布離婚的消息。^[14]最終兩人於2011年7月1日正式離婚。由於兩人並未簽訂婚前契約，兩人婚後的財產都將平分。^[15]

喬韓森會慶祝耶誕節和光明節^[16]並曾經表示過自己是猶太人^[17]^[18]

在2011年9月14日，FBI宣布調查指控有人駭入喬韓森的手機並且散佈喬韓森的裸照。^[19]^[20]^[21]在2011年12月的浮華世界雜誌上，喬韓森表示那張照片原本是三年前給當時的老公雷諾的照片^[22]，並且補充說明：「自拍並沒有什麼錯誤，又不是拍成人影片；雖然拍成人影片也不是錯誤就是了」"^[23]

喬韓森不喜歡有人稱呼她為「ScarJo」，她曾經表示這個稱呼「很糟糕」。^[24]
